Celebrating Artistic Voices: Salla Lehmus's Journey in Animation
Salla Lehmus, a Finnish 2D animator, has made a significant mark in the animation world with her vibrant artistic style and empowering narratives, particularly regarding female representation. Drawing inspiration from iconic Y2K aesthetics, Japanese animation, and video games, Lehmus infuses her work with a unique blend of color and emotion. From the impactful Libresse/Bodyform Womb Stories campaign to Marvel's Ms. Marvel, she has consistently brought fierce female characters to life.
The Evolution of Her Artistic Style
Lehmus attributes her distinct artistic style to the influence of inspiring women in her life and a commitment to illustrating characters that resonate with her own experiences. Her goal is to create confident and compelling female figures, developed through her work with Panimation, a network supporting women in animation. "I’ve always aimed to draw female characters that I’d like to see more myself," she remarked during an interview.
Behind the Scenes of Ms. Marvel
Working on the Marvel series was a collaborative effort with the team at Framestore and Soja. A highlight for Lehmus was animating a scene where the protagonist, Kamala Khan, navigates the city, accompanied by graffiti characters with distinct animation styles. "Each character had a distinct design and animation style... This variety allows for creative exploration and brings stories to life in a more engaging way," Lehmus noted.
The Charm of Highrise: A New Creation
Lehmus's latest venture involves bringing her aesthetic into the virtual realm of Pocket Worlds' Highrise app. Her custom Snugglin character is set to launch as a collectible companion within the game. "It’s been a while since I've had the chance to create something this cute and sparkly!" Lehmus reflected, indicating her excitement for this new challenge.
Animation's Role in Virtual Community Building
The blending of animation with virtual environments is pivotal to creating engaging community experiences. "Animation brings any virtual space to life! Through movement and timing, it gives the environment energy, helping viewers feel more connected to the design," said Lehmus, emphasizing the vital role animation can play in fostering connections in digital spaces. As users of Highrise engage with her creations, they become part of a vibrant storytelling community.
Looking to the Future: Hand-crafted vs AI
As generative AI becomes increasingly prevalent in creative industries, Lehmus stands firm in her belief that hand-crafted animation will remain valuable. She views AI as a tool that can assist but not replace the creativity and warmth that human artistry brings. “While AI can speed up some tedious processes, creativity and the ability to design something new start with individuals,” she asserts. This perspective highlights the importance of maintaining artistic integrity in the face of technological advancements.
